The end of a calendar year typically comes with an abundance of lists: Best Movies of 2015, Five Most Influential Books of 2015, and so on. This year I noticed the list theme continued into January with the following article headlines: 5 Steps to the Most Productive Year Ever, 10 Reasons to Start the New Year with a Cleanse, and 15 Wrestling Stars Who Will Make an Impact in 2016. That last one caught my eye—for obvious reasons (there are more than 15 professional wrestling stars?), but also because of that word: impact.
How can we make an impact this year?
Smiles of hope are always throughout a village as a new IAS well gets built.
As we begin the New Year, we recognize our world is complex and fraught with challenges. We see war and conflict, mass displacement and racial injustices, water insecurity and global poverty. What can we possibly do to help in the face of such overwhelming hardship?
Lists are popular because they help break down big concepts or goals into small, actionable items. If you want to make an impact in 2016 but you’re not sure where to start, take a look at this list.
Five Ways To Make an Impact in 2016
It’s the greatest commandment and a good place to start. This year, we can make an impact by loving God with an undivided heart, soul and mind. Focusing on that one aim will trickle down in ways that we couldn’t plan or put on a list.
When we focus on ourselves, our world contracts; by focusing on others, our world expands. Empathy has the power to heal and bridge divides.
Meet One New Neighbor
Jesus instructed us to go beyond our boundaries and love people who are different from us. This year, intentionally get to know someone from a different background than you. It may end up being the highlight of your year.
Join the IAS Clean Water Alliance
For those of you who like to “get things done,” this is one item you could cross off your list today. By supporting our clean water initiatives (either with a one-time or monthly gift, or by committing your family, business or organization to funding one of our projects), you’re helping to transform lives and communities in some of the most impoverished areas of the world. Go to IASwater.org to learn more or to join.
A village’s first well starts to take form.
Prayer makes a bigger impact than we can know. Your prayers for IAS and the people we serve are highly treasured, and we thank you in advance for your prayers in 2016.
This year, IAS is poised to impact in the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world. On behalf of our staff and everyone we serve, thank you for making that possible through your continued partnership and support.
EPHESIANS 2:10 (NIV)
“For we are God’s handiwork,
created in Christ Jesus
to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
“Why does this well always have water?” “Because IAS digs deeper than the others.” Last month I had the pleasure of attending a set of meetings in Nairobi, Kenya. The purpose of the meetings was to outline IAS’ global strategy for the coming four years. In attendance were people from 12 countries including: South Sudan, [...] Read story
Andy Warhol once said, “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” I’ve found that sentiment to hold true in my life. Certainly there have been times when twists and turns took me by surprise or God’s providence opened a door that I didn’t see in front of me. [...] Read story
